Where do your beliefs about the LGBTQIA+ community come from?
How do those beliefs inform the things you say?
Example: a family member shares with you that someone else in the family is something other than straight.
The response: “Maybe they’ll change their mind.”
Would you have said the same thing if that person was straight? Probably not.
Another response: “I love them anyway.”
Would you add a qualifier like “anyway” after the words I love you to a straight, cis-gendered family member? Probably not.
So, it’s important for you to understand why you say or believe certain things.
Are you just perpetuating messages you’ve heard growing up?
Are you not informed enough on the topic?
Does it make you uncomfortable?
If you wouldn’t say the same thing to a family member who is NOT in the LGBTQIA+ community, why would you say it to someone who was?
